The power of reading with your child
Reading with your child fosters literacy, gives you a chance to connect with your child, and helps your child learn about their social and emotional world.
When we read with children, they come to understand the world through the characters. They learn the characters’ thoughts, feelings, what drives them, what scares them, what makes them happy.
How does that happen? Dr. Raymond Mar is an expert on this. In 2014 he presented at the Roots of Empathy Research Symposium. Here's a short clip from his symposium presentation.
Now that you can see how sharing stories and talking about them with your child fosters social and emotional development, get cozy and enjoy this special reading of Mary Gordon's book, Daniel's Day, read by Mary herself. Mary Gordon is the founder of Roots of Empathy. For more information about the Roots of Empathy programme visit our programme page.
